LA Union Station

Los Angeles, CA

Union Station is the primary gateway to Los Angeles, serving roughly 100,000 passengers daily across Amtrak, Metrolink, LA Metro rail, and multiple bus lines — with ridership surging further during major events like the FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympics. Selbert Perkins Design has partnered with Metro, Gruen Associates, and Morlin Asset Management on an evolving, decades-long wayfinding program for this iconic transit hub.

The original system, completed in 2016 as part of the station’s revitalization, introduced wall-mounted LED signs for Amtrak and Metrolink arrivals and departures, a large interactive pylon with touchscreens for trip planning, identity pylons around the station’s perimeter, and new signage at Patsaouras Bus Plaza. The cohesive, branded system improved circulation and functionality while complementing the station’s historic architecture.

Building on that foundation, SPD is now leading a digital signage upgrade that modernizes the passenger experience for the next generation of travelers. The new digital displays deliver clear, ADA-compliant wayfinding and are directly integrated with transportation providers’ scheduling systems for real-time accuracy. Some displays are permanently mounted, while others — such as those in the historic Waiting Room — are designed to be reconfigured for events and changing technology without altering the building itself.

Together, these phases of work reflect SPD’s ongoing commitment to helping Union Station remain a functional, beautiful, and forward-looking gateway to Los Angeles.
