Union Station – Los Angeles, California

Opened in 1939, Union Station, Los Angeles, is the epitome of Southern California glamour. Built to unite five different railroads, through the melding of three diverse design styles, what has become known as the “Last of the Great Train Stations” has been uniting family, friends and the community for over eight decades.

Selbert Perkins Design, Gruen Associates and Los Angeles Metro, embraced the challenge of transforming this national historic landmark into a modern-day transportation hub while respecting and enhancing its beautiful and storied history as a connector of people.

The result of this labor of love, is a comprehensive wayfinding system, utilizing state-of-the-art interactive pylons, touchscreen trip planning and LED arrival/departure signage which is both intuitive to use as well as a beautiful addition to the iconic grandeur that is Union Station, Los Angeles.

Selbert Perkins also established a wayfinding standard, so that travelers can easily transit Amtrak intercity passenger rail, Metrolink commuter Metro rail and Metro bus services without the burden of deciphering different symbols and words.

Together, the talented professionals with Gruen Associates, Los Angeles Metro and Selbert Perkins Design have succeeded in making wayfinding both functional as well as beautiful.
